Student arrested for writing a story about zombies in a high school, because this constitutes threatening activity.

*bangs head against wall*

If he'd mentioned his high school in particular, or specific students/teachers, then I could perhaps understand. Or if it involved, y'know, guns and bombs. But a generic zombies-takeover-high-school story? And come on, zombies? This is a threat? If that's all it takes to constitute terrorism, Joss Whedon needs to be jailed pronto--just look at all the things he sics on his imaginary high schools! (and anyway, how can it be considered terrorism when he wasn't using the story to deliberately frighten people? Even if he had been {somehow}, who considers "May you be eaten by zombies!" a threat?)

And we won't mentions some of the stories I wrote while I was in high school. Or some of the stories my friends wrote. Bad Mr. Bucket!!!

(we won't mention Tony's forthcoming zombie invasion either. *gryns at [info]frostmorn*)

In brighter news, called to ask about why I'd been passed over for that interview, and was given entirely satisfactory reasons why (though am a little sad about this, because I really liked the lady I spoke with and think I would've liked working with her), and good advice for future applications to boot. But much better, called after the proofreading and in-house reader jobs I've been wanting info on; they didn't have any record of my emails requesting an application, but said that even though I was now past the apply-date, they'd send me an application and if I sent it back lickity-split they'd consider it. Ooooh, proofreading! *gryn* I wish I had some idea of how one becomes an editor. There's a job I could really sink my teeth into. Getting paid to read books and then correct the spelling and grammatical and characterization errors! BWAHAHAHAHAA!!!!!! I really should research how one gets into that line of work.

I'm still entirely failing to write this poem, alas. Perhaps not a surprise; current atmosphere is not condusive to poetic creativity, far too much happening. But grrrr, is frustrating. Perhaps should give up and find something by Tagore or Rumi.

Am reading Diana Wynne Jones' latest, but so far it makes me want to throw the book against the wall. Woe. When she's good she's very, very good, but when she's frustrating...aaaaaaaaiiiiigh!!! Perhaps should give up and read Hexwood instead, since I never have gotten around to that one.

Four days, oh lord. Is it too late to run off to Madagascar?

Do you really, really, really enjoy proofreading? Do you like to do it out of the goodness of your heart and for free? Would you love to proofread a PhD thesis? hehe

I do deeply love proofreading and have frequently done it out of the goodness of my heart and even proofread Masters theses, though not a PhD. However, realistically, I so don't have time to do it now unless someone pays me. Sorry!

I actually have a proofreading course I'm meant to be doing and I would love it, but my grammatical skills are teh suck. My school in Israel was fabulous except for the fact we were never taught grammar by our one teacher. INstead, I bluff and get in trouble for writing prose badly :P

A spokesman for Winchester police, when asked for the reason for the arrest said:

"Braaaiiiinnnnnssssss. We want braaaaaiiiiiiinnnnnnsssssss."

Honestly. Some Americans can be so paranoid sometimes.

Gosh, you really are a barbarian in terms of food choice, aren't you? One never, ever serves Guinness with brains. It is only ever served as a follow-up to a nice meal of entrails.

How uncouth of you.

What type of flamethrower do you have? Mine ain't working anymore. The last zombie I tried to flame broke it. Oh dear. Now people might work out that I've become a zombie. Uh-oh. I think I just told everyone that I'm now a zombie. Oh shit.

Conrad's Fate. I'm not so much stuck as putting it into the category of books that makes me want to run in and shake the characters. [info]randomchris tells me there are quirks and twists ahead and I should persevere, and most likely I will, but I wanted to rant.

In good news, they may be able to arrest children for this kind of behavior, but in the US they will no longer be able to kill them. See my journal for coverage of the latest Supreme Court decision.

I did not like Hexwood. I think my favorite is Fire & Hemlock. I also love Drowned Ammet and Spellcoats, which is part of a quartet, sandwiched between two other less satisfying titles.

Looking forward to anything new by DWJ, as I caught up on her two years ago.

The new book is turning out better than I'd expected, though I'm still a bit disappointed by the plot, for reasons that I'll explain after you've read it yourself. Oh well. Drowned Ammet and Spellcoats I haven't even heard of; what quartet is this?

I heard about the latest Supreme Court decision, and am biting my nails waiting to see what conclusions they come to regarding the Ten Commandments in a government building issue...

To me 10 Commandments is chump change compared to the way we treat our young people, and it's getting a heck of a lot more coverage.

I heard something very funny this morning about how many of the large 10 Commandments monuments were set up as publicity for Cecil B. Demille's movie by the same title. That cracked me up.

Drowned Ammet and The Spellcoats are a part of DWJ's Dalemark Quartet. (I couldn't think of the name for it this morning.) It's set in a continent where there are multiple gods, each book takes place in a different time period. The first book (Cart & Cwidder) I didn't really like. Ditto on the last book, but they're worth reading as context for the other two.

Spellcoats is prehistoric, and something about that book really moved me deeply, as it is about the development of written record. (In this case, magical weavings.)

No arguments about the hideous ways we treat our juveniles, though I admit that given my general feelings about the death penalty, my reaction is more along the lines of "Good, one step closer to abolishing the thing entirely." Is the 10 Commandments getting a lot of coverage, then? I can't think of it as chump change, because to me it's symbolic of the ways in which church and state are too closely tied, which is one of my passions and deepest worries for the country. So I'm very, very curious as to how this one will turn out.

Incidently, I may have had issues with Conrad's Fate to begin with, but it turned out pretty well, so I reccommend it. Is it released in the States yet? Which DWJ books have you read, incidently?

Conrad's Fate is coming out in April, so it is not yet released... (although I should ask bookreporter if I can review it!)

To the best of my knowledge I have read all of DWJs books, (I discovered her while in NY,) with the exception of A Sudden Wild Magic, several short story collections, and one or two picture books.

I think you would enjoy the Chrestomanci series, though I dislike Book #3 - Magicians of Caprona. And the first book DWJ I recommend to anyone (including grownups who don't usually read childrens literature) is Dark Lord of Derkholm, which is a hilarious sendup of D&D style fantasy.

Miyuzaki has made a film of Howl's Moving Castle, which will be released in the states this summer. It's not one of my favorites among her books, but I think it will fit Miyuzaki's themes, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Also, DWJ and Neil Gaiman are friends, and I believe she based the character of Nick in Deep Secret and The Merlin Conspiracy is based in part on him.

Regarding proofreading/copy editing - this aspect of publishing is either farmed out to freelancers, (or India where most people have excellent English, and will work for less money,) or performed in the production departments of most publishing companies. The production track is very different than the editorial track. It's something I wish I knew more about (particularly the technical aspects of printing books,) but it is more valuable (and more interesting) for me to stick with the developmental (editorial) track.

Most companies require that you take a test. It is helpful to know the traditional editorial marks that can be learned in any proofreading class. (I learned them in college, but have forgotten them in the intervening years.)

Newspapers also love good copy editors. I have no idea how it works in Britain, but in the states, they usually like some sort of journalism background, then you start your career in a small town in a isolated location. And if you're lucky you can move to a larger market.
